I had Forsaken God for Ideologies
Unrated: (0)
by Kyle Martin

For as long as I can remember, my friends have referred to me as the busy one. I am known for my ability to get many things done at once. With this new challenge of church planting in urban Vancouver before me, I often consider how will I fill up my time. I have to make a conscious effort to fight the temptation of filling my schedule with activity simply for the comfort of being busy. ...more
Church Planting: What’s different 20 years later?

Me! Yes, as much as any societal change. I feel, think, believe and behave differently. Because postmodernism has been described, labeled and analyzed thoroughly by experts, I will illustrate what is different by describing a key element of my 22-year journey in church planting. ...more
The Long Road

For some time now I’ve thought that this path God has me on was leading me from one form of “church” to a newer version of the same thing. I don’t believe that anymore. I think it’s deeper; more an issue of calling than career. Setting aside for a moment all the heady chatter about “cultural transformation” and “postmodern shift” I’m sensing a more intimate struggle. Week after week I perform my duties as a pastor and struggle to find encouragement and motivation to continue. ...more

We are a new emergent church plant in Nashville, TN meeting in a house. This past week we focused on "What is a Disciple of Christ?". What really hit most of us is that when we look in the scriptures and study what the disciples did doesn't reflect how most disciples in America look today. ...more

Last Thursday Wendy and I attended a Teen Challenge Graduation Ceremony in Santa Ana. We arrived early, got to meet a few people, and sat back as the flurry of activity took place around us while the team was setting up for the celebration. They set up tables, chairs, and laid out food and drinks for everyone to share after the ceremony. ...more

Yesterday I had one of those days that you anticipate with dread. Wendy and I have been slowly transitioning out of the church we had helped to plant in Tustin over three years ago. Since October of last year we have been meeting with our friends and fellow pastors about feeling called to leave and start a new church elsewhere. ...more
In Praise of Drinking Beer

A couple days a week, I spent the morning at my favorite coffee shop. Inevitably, in walks the usual crowd: the road warrior sales guy, the college student, the tattooed rocker, the skeptic, the crude car dealer, and me, the pastor. The beauty of these mornings is that they are never coordinated. It seems that whenever a couple of us gather, in meanders the whole group. ...more

Sometimes God surprises us and does something unexpected. It started with Jason, one of my good friends and a member of our house church family. He was on his way to our meeting, running a bit late as usual due to the fact that he works in Hollywood and has to take the train home every evening. ...more
Blink. Squint-Squint. Blink-Blink.

I love eyes. I love looking into my wife’s eyes when we hold each other. I love looking into the eyes of my family when we sit and share our hearts with one another. I love looking into the eyes of people I am listening to. It helps me listen, because I feel they are giving me more of their heart. Even if, while talking to me, they can't look me in the eye -- this in itself helps me understand them more. ...more
A Word For Josh: A Mission House Church Update

A few weeks ago I had the honor of welcoming my friend John and his wife Lisa into our house church meeting. They were both in Orange County to play as part of the band “West Of Verona” during the weekend conference I was overseeing for Soul Survivor called “Momentum ‘06”. John and Lisa are dear friends that my wife and I have known for many years. To see them again was a blessing, but to have them join us in our house church was an even greater one. So, when they arrived that Thursday evening, (all the way from Washington), they brought along the rest of the band, including the drummer’s wife, Angela. ...more
